El Morralàs, the Northern Spur of the Serra dels Pinotells
El Morralàs, the Northern Spur of the Serra dels Pinotells
Riding the ridge between Estellencs and Calvià, across the public estates of Son Fortuny and Galatzó
This route straddles the boundary between the municipalities of Estellencs and Calvià, weaving through two iconic public estates in the Serra de Tramuntana: Son Fortuny and Galatzó. The hike, though not technically difficult, leads to breathtaking views from the summit of El Morralàs (660 m), a rocky outcrop at the northern tip of the Serra dels Pinotells.
Starting from the Moleta Rasa, which lies directly on the border between the two municipalities, the trail leads to the sheer cliffs of El Morralàs, where a dramatic panorama over the southern coastline of the Tramuntana awaits. A mix of restored trails, forest tracks, and off-path ascents gives this route a character both rugged and deeply rooted in local heritage.
Access
The hike begins at kilometre 97 on the Ma-10 (Tramuntana road), where a dirt track branches off toward the Boal de les Serveres. If you're arriving by public transport, it's possible to start from the village of Estellencs and follow the GR-221 (Dry Stone Route), adding roughly 3 hours to the overall hike.
The Route
[00 min] From the road, we start up a wide forest track that climbs steadily through a pine-covered hillside. This track, built in the 1970s, replaced an older cart path and leads us into the former estate lands of Son Fortuny—once the largest possession in Estellencs.
[15 min] After a few switchbacks, we reach a key junction at the foot of El Morralàs (660 m). The main track to the right continues toward the Coma d’en Vidal refuge and Capdellà, but we take the left-hand fork, signposted for Boal de les Serveres and Puig de Galatzó. The trail here is gentle at first, then steepens until it reaches a small recreation area [20 min], shaded by a holm oak grove—a perfect spot for a short break.
From here, we follow the sign for Pas del Cossi and Puig de Galatzó, heading west along a narrower path. This is an old bridle trail that zigzags upward toward Coll del Morro (480 m), flanked by the rocky outcrops of Cingle Redó to the right and Morro de les Serveres to the left. [35 min] At the top of the pass, a wooden signpost points the way to Puig de Galatzó. Instead, we turn right (south/southwest) onto a trail that begins gently but soon climbs toward another saddle between the Moleta Rasa (to the left) and El Morralàs (to the right) [45 min].
Summit of Moleta Rasa
At this saddle, we leave the main trail and head east, off-path, following a clear line of cairns. We’re walking the exact border between the municipalities of Estellencs and Calvià—and also between the Son Fortuny and Galatzó estates. The ascent is over open, rocky terrain, not too steep and with little vegetation.
[1 h 05 min] At the summit, we’re rewarded with a 360º view: Puig de Galatzó, Moleta de l’Esclop, and a sweeping vista of ridges, spurs, and forested slopes.
On to El Morralàs
We descend the same way and return to the main trail [1 h 20 min], then continue westward. The trail rises gently again before dropping to a small saddle [1 h 35 min], where the path forks—left to the Comellar de les Sínies (Galatzó estate), right to the Serra dels Pinotells (Son Fortuny estate). We follow neither. Instead, we aim north, off-trail again, using a compass or GPS if needed.
We traverse diagonally up the slope ahead, avoiding the ridge crest, and aim for the northernmost point of the range—where a rocky platform marks the summit of El Morralàs. The final section involves a short and straightforward scramble.
[2 h 05 min] The summit, at 660 metres, offers one of the finest viewpoints in this part of the Tramuntana. Below us lies the Coma d’en Vidal, with its forest track winding through the valley. The sea shimmers in the distance. It's a good place to linger, breathe deeply, and savour the silence—with what my father used to call “the caution of an old beast”.
Descent
We retrace our steps to descend. From the summit, we aim south to reconnect with the main trail. Once back, we return via Pas del Cossi to the Boal de les Serveres, then down the forest track to the Ma-10 road.
